Many people ask themselves if they should be worried about carpenter ants. After all, they do not cause the same type of damage as termites, right? Wrong, because a carpenter ant infestation can cause you lots of hassle and expensive repair bills in the future if not handled correctly. Carpenter ants are looking for a place to nest and that could start in your home or crawl space.

What Are The Signs Of A Carpenter Ant Infestation?

When it comes down to carpenter ants, it is important to know that these ants can get in pretty much any wood. If you notice signs of an infestation, it is important to tackle the problem immediately. If you don’t, then the infestation could cause some serious damage to your home.

Many people often ignore these types of ants, not understanding how dangerous they can actually be. Even treating with DIY pest control products will not be enough to control or defeat the ant infestation.

Carpenter ants tend to avoid dry wood, so they usually look up moist spots in your home such as near your air conditioning system. Most people will notice these types of ants in their home pretty easily, as the worker ants will be visible around the home.

Even though carpenter ants can be spotted easily, you do have to remember that these ants can look for food at quite a distance. So, seeing carpenters – and not the good kind – in your kitchen does not mean their nest is nearby. It could be anywhere inside your home.

As the ant infestation gets worse, you might spot some ants when you move any of your wood items inside your home. In addition to that, you might be hearing some rustling noises inside your home as well, especially inside wooden beams and walls.

How Can I Make Sure They Are Carpenter Ants?

To make sure you are dealing with the right type of species of ants, it is a good idea to catch one in a plastic container. Then, use a magnifying glass to see if it is a carpenter ant. These types ants always have a small rounded back without any visible humps.

Once you determine your home has carpenter ants, it is important to contact a pest control service as soon as possible. Never let the problem linger, as serious infestations could lead to thousands of dollars in damages.

How Do I Prevent Carpenter Ants In The Future?

Your chosen pest control service can provide you with loads of tips and tricks on keeping those ants at bay. Of course, there are a couple of things you can do already to prevent carpenter ants in the future.

One of the first things to do is to seal any gaps and cracks in the exterior walls of your home. Be sure to check around pipes as well, since it can happen that the area is not properly sealed. In addition to checking the exterior walls of your home, you want to check your garden as well.

Try to keep branches and other types of wood debris away from your home as much as possible. If you do need wood in your garden, make sure there is some distance between your home and where you keep the wood in your garden, as this may be a primary attraction for carpenter ants.

Thank you for explaining how removing the openings from your home’s exterior can prevent ants from entering your house. My wife and I noticed a small trail of ants crawling toward our kitchen pantry when we were doing the dishes last night, and we think that may be entering through a small crack in our wall. We’ll find someone that can help prevent unwanted pests from getting into the house.
